Calculate your take-home payThe same salary, 51 states
A $75,000 salary is worth $6,439 more in Florida than Oregon
Same gross pay, same federal tax, same filing status — the difference is entirely state income tax and state payroll programmes. Figures are annual take-home for a single filer in 2026, calculated with the same engine as the calculators themselves.

How the numbers are worked out
Modelled from the withholding rules, not a flat percentage
A payslip is four separate calculations stacked on top of each other, each with its own base and its own exceptions. Averaging them produces a number that looks plausible and is quietly wrong.
- 01
Federal tax on taxable income, not gross
Your standard deduction comes off first, then the seven federal brackets apply to what's left — not to your whole salary. Most quick estimates get this wrong and overstate the bill.
- 02
FICA on a different base entirely
Social Security stops at the $184,500 wage base; Medicare never stops and adds a surtax on high earners. Neither is reduced by your 401(k).
- 03
State rules that actually differ
Pennsylvania taxes 401(k) contributions where Illinois doesn't. Washington withholds two payroll premiums despite having no income tax. These are modelled per state, not averaged.
- 04
The local taxes most tools skip
Ohio cities, Pennsylvania municipalities and every Maryland county levy their own income tax. Leaving them out can overstate take-home pay by more than a thousand dollars a year.
Local income taxes are modelled for the 11 states where cities or counties levy them. All figures use 2026 rates.

Methodology
Every rate traces back to a primary source
No averaged percentages and no hard-coded guesses. Each state page links to that state's own revenue department so you can check the figure yourself — and where a rate hasn't been individually verified, the page says so next to the result rather than presenting it as fact.
