Where the payroll tax curve bends

At $150,000 a single filer is approaching the Social Security wage base — the ceiling above which Social Security contributions stop entirely. Medicare continues on every dollar, but the 6.2% Social Security element ends.

The consequence is counterintuitive: effective FICA falls as income rises past the base. It is one of the few points where the US system becomes less progressive rather than more, and it produces a small but real jump in take-home pay partway through the year for anyone earning above it.

At this level state income tax is one of the largest single variables in net pay. The spread between the highest and lowest tax states on this salary exceeds ten thousand dollars a year.

What $150k a year means in practice

That is about 242% of typical US full-time individual earnings. The standard deduction shelters 11% of it from federal income tax, leaving $133,900 taxable — which puts the top of this income in the 24% federal band. Federal income tax works out at roughly 16.5% of gross, while FICA takes a flat 7.7% — so income tax has overtaken payroll tax as the bigger line.

On the widely used guideline of spending no more than 30% of gross income on housing, $150k a year supports rent of about $3,750 a month. That is a starting point rather than a rule — it ignores your other commitments, and in high-cost metros it is frequently unachievable, which is why many households end up above it.

The hourly equivalent above assumes a 40-hour week. Many salaried roles run 37.5 hours, which raises the effective rate to $76.92 an hour — worth knowing when comparing a salaried offer against an hourly one.
