Barista FIRE means part-time work covers some expenses (and often health benefits), so your portfolio only needs to fund the gap. That shrinks your target and pulls your timeline in.

A Barista FIRE calculator shows how much smaller your retirement target becomes when part-time work covers some of your expenses. Instead of saving enough to fund your entire lifestyle, you only need a portfolio big enough to cover the gap between your spending and your part-time income. Enter your age, savings, expenses and expected part-time earnings, and FinCalcs shows your Barista FIRE number, how it compares to full FIRE, and when you could reach it.

What is Barista FIRE?

Barista FIRE is a halfway house between full-time work and full early retirement. The idea is to save enough that you can quit your demanding career and switch to enjoyable, low-stress part-time work that covers part of your costs — while your investments cover the rest. The name comes from coffee chains like Starbucks that offer health insurance to part-time staff, which solves one of the biggest hurdles for early retirees in the US: affordable healthcare before Medicare age.

The math is a twist on the standard FIRE formula. Full FIRE requires a portfolio of about 25 times your annual spending (the 4% rule). Barista FIRE requires only 25 times the *gap* between your spending and your part-time income. If you spend $45,000 a year and expect to earn $20,000 from part-time work, your portfolio only needs to generate $25,000 — so your Barista FIRE number is about $625,000 rather than the $1,125,000 full FIRE would demand. That part-time income does enormous work: every dollar it covers is 25 dollars you don't need to save.

Because the target is so much lower, Barista FIRE is reachable years — sometimes a decade or more — earlier than full FIRE. That makes it one of the most popular variations of the movement, especially for people who don't actually want to stop working entirely but do want to escape a high-pressure career. It offers most of the freedom of FIRE without requiring the full nest egg.

A few things to weigh. Your part-time income needs to be realistic and reasonably durable — if it dries up, your portfolio has to absorb the difference. Healthcare and benefits are often the real motivation, so factor in whether your part-time role provides them. And like all FIRE math, this uses real (after-inflation) returns and the 4% rule as a guideline, not a guarantee. Used thoughtfully, Barista FIRE turns early financial freedom from a distant dream into a much nearer, more flexible goal.

The formula

Barista FIRE number = (Annual expenses − Part-time income) ÷ (safe withdrawal rate ÷ 100)
(e.g. at 4%, multiply the gap by 25)

Full FIRE number = Annual expenses × 25, shown for comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Barista FIRE?+

Barista FIRE is reaching enough savings to leave full-time work for low-stress part-time work that covers some expenses, while your portfolio covers the rest. It's a faster, more flexible version of early retirement.

How is the Barista FIRE number calculated?+

Take your annual expenses, subtract your expected part-time income, and multiply the gap by 25 (the 4% rule). Because part-time income covers part of your costs, the portfolio you need is much smaller than full FIRE.

Why is Barista FIRE easier to reach than full FIRE?+

Because your investments only need to cover the gap between spending and part-time income, not your entire lifestyle. Every dollar of part-time income is 25 dollars less you need to save, often pulling the timeline in by years.

Why is it called Barista FIRE?+

The name references coffee chains like Starbucks that offer health benefits to part-time workers. Affordable healthcare before traditional retirement age is a major reason people choose part-time work in early retirement.
