What is Tip?
A tip, or gratuity, is an extra amount added to a bill to reward service, most commonly in restaurants, bars, taxis and personal services. Tipping customs vary widely by country, but where it's expected the calculation is always the same: a percentage of the bill, often split among a group.
The standard approach is to apply a tip percentage to the pre-tax bill. In the United States, where tipping is deeply embedded in the service economy, 15% to 20% is typical for restaurant service, with 18% to 20% considered standard for good service and more for exceptional service. Many people simply round to a convenient number. In other countries, tipping may be modest, included automatically as a service charge, or not customary at all, so it's worth knowing local norms when you travel.
A common question is whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount. Etiquette generally says the tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill, since the tax isn't part of the service — though many people tip on the total for simplicity, which only adds a small amount. This calculator lets you apply the percentage to whatever bill figure you enter.
Splitting the bill is the other half of the equation. When dining as a group, the fairest and simplest method is usually to add the tip to the bill and divide the grand total by the number of people, so everyone covers an equal share of both the meal and the gratuity. For groups, some restaurants add an automatic gratuity (often 18%) to the bill, in which case you shouldn't tip again on top.
Beyond restaurants, tipping applies in many situations — taxis and rideshares, hairdressers, food delivery, hotel staff and more — each with its own customary rate. This calculator handles any tip percentage and any number of people, taking the mental math (and the social awkwardness) out of settling the bill.
The formula
Tip = Bill × (tip % ÷ 100) Total = Bill + Tip Per person = Total ÷ number of people
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip?+
In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurant service, with 18–20% for good service. Customs differ by country and service type, so check local norms. For large groups, watch for an automatic gratuity already added to the bill.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?+
Etiquette says tip on the pre-tax bill, since tax isn't part of the service. Many people tip on the total for simplicity, which only adds a little. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer.
How do I split a bill with a tip?+
Add the tip to the bill to get the grand total, then divide by the number of people so everyone pays an equal share of both the meal and the gratuity. This calculator does it automatically.
What is an automatic gratuity?+
Some restaurants add a set service charge (often 18%) for larger groups. If your bill already includes an automatic gratuity, you generally don't need to add another tip on top.
